Why Being Grateful is Your Key to Success

also posted in Jane's Blog

Gratitude. Appreciation, Praise. Thankfulness. Acknowledgment. All of these words when applied make you feel good – so why don’ t we do it more? Why isn’t the whole world focusing on feeling grateful, being appreciative, giving praise, expressing thanks, and acknowledging others? And particularly in the world of business, how come managers need to be educated in praising their staff, employers need to be coaxed into noticing the positive in their team members, and solo professionals like you often completely forget to appreciate themselves for what they are contributing to the world?

It does seem like it is easier to focus on what you haven’t got, what is missing, or the things that make you feel bad, than [read more]

Addictive Deals vs Good Deals — What Are You Offering?

also posted in Jane's Blog

That’ s a good deal! My eyes lit up as I saw an offer for a bar of chocolate for just £1. My hand reached out to take it and put it in my shopping basket. And then I stopped. What was I doing? I didn’t want this chocolate. It was a huge bar, and I didn’t want to have that much chocolate around in the house. Why was I about to purchase it? I put it back. I took it up again; again, I put it back. Recognising I was dithering I moved away from the chocolate display, closed my eyes and breathed deeply.

For instance, I only last year discovered while doing an affirmations exercise that I had an old belief lurking around that ‘it is the man’s [read more]

‘I can’t bear the anxiety any longer’ said Meredith, a client. ‘It’s taking over my life, causing me to wake in the wee small hours, and nudging at me at all hours of the daytime too, what can I do?’ She was worried about – well, many things — money (lack of), time (lack of), clients (lack of), work (too much), responsibility (too much) and fear (too much). What to do? I understood her well, because I have known these feelings too, and they sometimes still knock on my door.

‘Let us first simply be still and acknowledge what is going on right now,’ I said. And this first willingness took us into a conversation that became a learning of [read more]

Piles of Paper — Friend or Foe?

also posted in Jane's Blog

There are many different kinds of filing systems and one of the most common is piles. Piles of paper that is. Look around your office or desktop (real or computer) now – do you have piles? Do you know what is in them? Can you, with your hand on your heart, say that you can find anything you want? If not, then read on.

As I look around me now, I see 3 very neat piles in a filing tray. I know what these are – the bottom one is for papers I’ve attended to and are waiting to be filed in the filing cabinet. The middle one is for papers that I call ‘Pending’, ie those things that I [read more]
