5 steps to get tenants into your property when the usual methods haven’t worked

also posted in Business Basics

A landlord’s nightmare — one of my properties had been empty for months. The previous tenant had done a bunk, and although I’d done all the right things, refurbished, and redecorated inside and out in neutral colours, put it with different agents, placed ads myself, nothing was happening. A few viewings but no takers. I really couldn’t understand this, and with £300 going out each month on the mortgage, this was just not OK.

Finally, I was prompted into taking inner action by a close friend, who said ‘You have to love that house Jane! At the moment, you’re hating it, resenting it, and wishing you hadn’t bought it. That won’t work.’

She was right, and I just hadn’t realised [read more]

Radiance Requires Retreat

When you are around someone whom you describe as radiant, you’re basking in their apparent light. You are in the presence of someone who is ‘beaming with hope or joy or love’ (Concise Oxford Dictionary). It is often very nourishing, and you may find yourself wanting to rub up against that person, perhaps hoping some of their radiance will spill over onto you. So how do you become radiant yourself, and what effect does it have on your business?

Radiance – I’ve defined it above, although another meaning in this context is ‘emitting rays of light’. And that is what someone who is being radiant appears to be doing, shining light everywhere they go. When light is shone, areas of [read more]

There’s not enough, is there?

It would be easy in these days of the credit crunch to simply think ‘there’s not enough’ – oil, energy, money, safety, security, love, peace – I could go on. When people focus on ‘not enough’, that’s what they tend to get, regardless of how ‘much’ there actually is. That’s why someone who has millions still feels poor; or someone who is surrounded by security measures still doesn’t feel safe; or someone who owns oil wells that are running dry begins to feel worried and anxious about the future. So, is there really not enough?

Clearly, there are consequences when there is not enough. Not enough food, water or shelter can cause death. But I’m really addressing the developed world [read more]

Mastermind Magic: using the power of the third mind

Sitting in my friend’s room, overlooking Findhorn Bay, were 6 people. Apparently nothing was happening, as everyone had their eyes closed, no-one saying anything. But we were in a circle facing each other, so clearly something was going on.

To an outsider, it might have looked a bit odd. To us, well, it was one of the fortnightly Mastermind meetings that we have. We’d begun as usual in silence, which is about giving ourselves a time of reflection, to gather thoughts, to focus our minds on what the next 2.5 hours would be about.

As the first fifteen minutes drew to a close, our leader for that week asked everyone to state a success from the past fortnight (we’re really [read more]

The emptiness of New Year’s Resolutions

I wonder why it is that so often New Year’s Resolutions are set and then not achieved? The failure rate of achieving them is spectacularly high, unlike other types of goal setting. Why is this?

My take on this is informed by many years of having a successful counselling and psychotherapy practice, where clients would regularly be admitting to me their dreadful secret: they hated Christmas, didn’t want to go ‘home’, and secretly wished the whole thing would go to pot!

But off they would go, grin and bear it, and then emerge into January with all sorts of good intentions, perhaps borne out of relief that they’d survived another Christmas.

New Year Resolutions made in this context are likely [read more]
