Steve Jobs puts Life and Death in Their Place

As Apple employees gather Wednesday at their campus in Cupertino, Calif., to remember the life of their erstwhile CEO, they, like most of the rest of us, will doubtless focus much of their celebration on Steve Jobs’ achievements in the external, material world. That’s understandable.

But it is his achievements in the inner world that might yet become his most valuable and profound legacy. Jobs would remind himself virtually every morning that this could be his last day on earth — and that was not since or because he was diagnosed with cancer. He had actually been doing this since his 20s. People talk poetically about such notions often, but [read more]

The Real Meaning of Rich

also posted in Jane's Blog

In the Western world, the word ‘rich’ is taken to mean having plenty of material possessions, be it property, cash, goods of other kinds; and words associated with this would be opulent, extravagant, wealthy, affluent, etc.

But I think real richness is much more than these things, which are a narrow definition, to say the least.

When you are rich, you are rich regardless of the amount of money you have. Of course, if you don’t have enough money to provide you with the basic necessities such as food and water, shelter and warmth, then because these are matters of bodily survival, you won’t be interested in whether you are rich or not, because you will be [read more]

“Yes,” I replied. “Are you worrying?”

“Yes.”

“Let’s throw the I Ching then,” I said. This is the ancient and highly respected Chinese method of divination, one of my middle of the night survival tools, which never fails to calm me down if I am worrying, no matter what about. This time, the hexagram received was number 15, Modesty, and although I hadn’t consulted it with business in mind, later that day I began to reflect on the presence (or not) of modesty in business.

What is modesty, and can there be a place for it at all in business? TheFreeDictionary.com defines it as “having or showing [read more]

Can Business and Love Go Together?

also posted in Jane's Blog

Love is the theme this week, it seems. When I looked at my emails this morning, the Angel of the Day was Love. Some very old friends of ours are coming to visit from America for a few days. Another friend who has been giving Philip EFT offered to put off her holiday and continue giving sessions. My brother Simon has announced the launch of his new online Loving Life programme, free for the month of October. How much love there is!

But can you run a business with love? Can those two words even go together? In fact, this is not a new idea. Reading Chocolate Wars recently by Deborah Cadbury, I was struck by the heartfelt [read more]
