About Jane

J08“I want to know what makes people tick!”

That was my passion aged 16, and it’s been my passion every since. As a teenager, I was already fascinated by how people thought, why they thought what they did, and the resulting behaviour (not to mention my own!). Click here to read about my teenage spiritual awakening. Later, with a psychology degree and Diploma in HR Management under my belt, I’d become head of the HR department in a leading department store in London. But I still wasn’t satisfied, not in terms of my personal life, nor what I was learning about others. In the early 80’s, ripe for a change, I ended up in what I would now call a cult, where I certainly started learning and my personal development journey accelerated enormously.

Redundancy

Eventually I moved on, by choosing a redundancy option from the cult, (one of the best things I ever did in my life was joining that organisation, and one of the others was escaping from it!) and in 1988, I traveled to the Greek island of Skyros, where I worked for a holistic holiday company as part of the management team for three years. During this time I was a personal student of Louise L. Hay of “You Can Heal Your Life” fame in California, and returned to England to begin leading study groups based on her book. Now I was really beginning to understand about ‘what made people tick!’

“Jane Duncan has written a brilliant book that will help you turn your life around.”

Louise L.Hay

Under my maiden name of Jane Duncan, I led groups around the UK and Europe for ten years, mostly based on Louise Hay’s work, and I also built up a private practice as a counselor and psychotherapist, publishing two books and several audio tapes. Choose Your Thoughts Change Your Life was well received and this was the comment that Louise Hay made of this book.

At the same time, with my husband Philip, I wrote Sixty Ways to Lose/Keep Your Lover, a book about improving your relationship through the use of positive affirmations.

Our complementary health business

We then started a related business that grew into the largest complementary health clinic in the UK outside of London, with over 50 practitioners and ten rooms. Here I had the opportunity to learn and put into practice many different business skills.

Illness and money

In 2003 Philip became very ill with ME. We were forced to re-look at our attitudes to finance and money, as he couldn’t work and clearly wasn’t going to be able to for the foreseeable future. We changed our lives dramatically by selling the Clinic in 2004; I stopped running courses/seeing clients, and we were compelled to re-evaluate where we were going and why, especially about how we made our living. As I started to think differently about money, wealth, riches and business, I began to develop much more mental wealth, alongside business strategies and financial knowledge. After a long holiday in New Zealand, some time spent in Ireland checking out communities to live near, and dabbling in the housing and property market there, RichThinkers was born when we moved to Scotland, where we live now.

In the credit crunch, we have ended up owing a considerable amount of money to banks; which has provided the biggest opportunity of all to think rich! Not always easy, as you probably know.

Throughout all this, my relationship with the spiritual side of life and of business has been challenged, grown, faltered, grown again and now is the backbone of all that I do. Without this emphasis, I would be lost — and indeed I do become lost sometimes, just like everyone else! But I also know how to return, quickly, to a place of peace inside myself, where no matter what outer events are going on in my life, I can find a resting place inside. I’m incredibly grateful for that.

RichThinkers

RichThinkers is the result of this lifelong fascination I have with how humans think, and the application of my psychological, spiritual and business skills to support all kinds of self-employed professionals in making their practices, businesses and lives as successful, meaningful and fulfilling as possible. I’m still learning and hope I always will, as I just love it!

My purpose with RichThinkers is to inspire and awaken others to live their lives in abundance, pleasure, joy, happiness, peace and contentment.

My husband’s death

The latest big event in my life has been supporting my husband through his journey with cancer (in October 2010) and then his death in December 2011. Philip wrote a blog throughout this year which affected and inspired many hundreds of people, and I continued this for him when he was unable to write any more. In the month after he died, I realised I wanted to offer counselling and therapy sessions again, quite apart from the RichThinkers business coaching, which has taken a bit of a back seat in the last year, not surprisingly. So I have that string to my bow again now too — and loving it!
