Why do you need ideal clients? Why won’t just anyone do? Surely your service or product is so brilliant that everyone could benefit from using it? It might seem that way in theory, but in practice, knowing who your ideal client or customer is, and focusing your work towards that person, is one of the most easily identifiable ways of growing your business.
I was speaking to a colleague of mine the other day about a conference he was organising for a company. He was frustrated because they were stubbornly resisting his advice.

Success, Malcolm Gladwell and being an Outlier

In Malcolm Gladwell’s new book ‘Outliers’, about the story of success, he writes:
“Success is a function of persistence and doggedness and the willingness to work hard for twenty two minutes to make sense of something that most people would give up on after thirty seconds.”
What’s all this about twenty two seconds? He tells a story about a young Maths student trying to work out an algebra problem. Where most students would spend anything from thirty seconds to five minutes trying to solve a problem, this young woman spends twenty two minutes before she solves the problem. The others, taking less time, give up.
This reminds me of my approach to doing crosswords, versus my husband’s. He will spend a long time, in fact, however long it takes, (more...)
