Blogging from under the duvet
As I write this, I’m sitting in bed. I’d been having an afternoon nap and wasn’t quite ready to get up, so I brought the laptop back to bed with me. After all, who said you always have to work from your desk or your office?
It never occurred to me to do this until I met a friend whom I haven’t seen for a while, and she described her day to me. With a young child, I was interested how she managed to make time for her own writing.
“We take it in turns to take care of Daniel, and when it’s his turn to do the childcare, I scarper back to bed with my laptop. I love it. There’s masses of room, its the most beautiful room in the house, quiet, with lovely views — but best of all, simply because I’m sitting in bed, I don’t feel like I’m working, and I get masses done!”
And she’s right. Or at least, for me she is. There’s something about lying back propped up by lots of pillows, hot water bottle on my feet, phone to hand, laptop on my knees, that is just, well, different, from sitting at my desk. Not that I don’t sit at the desk, but this bed-desk is great too!
Try it and see next time you need to be on your laptop. Use it in all sorts of different places in your house, and notice what you’re feeling. I’m pretty sure you’ll find you suddenly have a variety of new ‘offices’, and you might even find you have favourite places in which to do particular types of work.
