Deva Premal and Miten

posted in Jane's Blog

Imagine the octagonal shaped Universal Hall at the Findhorn Foundation, the youngest listed building in the country, created with love and filled with over 300 people all listening to simply beautiful Indian chants, mantras and a touch of blues.

This is what I was listening to last night — Deva Premal and Miten, along with Manose, a very talented Indian flute player, were transporting me to seventh heaven! They were so loving in the creation of their music, so funny in their stories, and so willing to share the creation of a loving space that it was impossible not to be moved by their music. CLASS NOTES AND RECORDING

All who are on the RichThinking Way are interested in making a difference, therefore it is important to say what you do in such a way that it will make a difference to those who hear it. Your elevator speech is from the outside only. To find a really authentic and impactful way of speaking about what you do, it’s best to start from the inside and work out.

Your jewel is your passion and your ‘calling’. It’s the qualities that belong to you that shine through all kinds of things in your life not just your business. But it shines or doesn’t in your business too.

Your Jewel is already there – just forgotten. Or [read more]

Are you a gobbler or a sipper?

I heard someone describe themselves the other day as ‘gobbling down information’, and I recognised myself — I do tend to read books thinking I have to get to the end and then I’ll have finished it; or to find it a challenge to relax into just listening to a teleclass, or a recording of some kind.

At university I perfected the art of doodling while listening to the lecturers, and I still do that today. It does help me to concentrate and it’s one way I’ve learnt of managing the need to ‘gobble’. The problem with gobbling is that you’re so busy getting the information down your throat that, just like gobbling real food, you don’t notice the taste [read more]

RichThinker of the Month: Satish Kumar

posted in Uncategorised

satishWhen he was only nine years old, Satish Kumar renounced the world and joined the wandering brotherhood of Jain monks. Dissuaded from his path by an inner voice at the age of eighteen, he left the monastic order and became a campaigner for land reform, working to turn Gandhi’s vision of a peaceful world into reality. Fired by the example of Bertrand Russell, he undertook an 8,000 mile peace pilgrimage, walking from India to America without any money, through deserts, mountains, storms and snow. It was an adventure during which he was thrown into jail in France, faced a loaded gun in America – and delivered packets of ‘peace tea’ to the leaders of the four nuclear powers. In 1973, [read more]

Definitions of failure

posted in Business Basics

Up here in Moray, we have a new scheme being run by the Highlands and Islands Enterprise service. It’s a business mentoring scheme, where already successful business owners are paired up with other business owners who want to grow their business. I met with the man who is responsible for organising this up here, and I was telling him a bit about my background. I mentioned that our business in Ireland had gone belly up in the credit crunch.

What he said next had me pricking up my ears. ‘We have links with MIT in Boston, Massachusetts, and over there they have a different attitude to failure than we have. In fact, you’re not considered successful until you’ve had at [read more]
