If you want someone to read your poster, flier, brochure, webpage or any other literature, you need to get their attention. It’s the equivalent of calling out someone’s name. Imagine you’re at a party. There’s lots of people and they’re all engaged with talking to someone else. You begin to talk, even though you’re not talking to anyone in particular. You wonder why no-one is breaking off their existing conversations and listening to you. Sounds mad doesn’t’ it? But this is exactly what happens when you put our your literature without a headline that stops people in their tracks. Think about it. In the party situation, you would introduce yourself, or get someone’s attention by calling their name. Whatever way you do it, you make sure you have the attention of the person before you start talking. So why wouldn’t you do that with your literature? The purpose of a headline is to interrupt someone’s train of thought, and to get them to want to carry on reading what you have to say. Without a great headline it will be much more difficult to make yourself stand out from all the others in the crowd.
