‘You can have what you want’.
When I was first faced with this statement, many years ago, I found myself getting absolutely furious! The fury was so out of proportion that I knew something else was interfering. I was arguing madly for why exactly I could not have what I wanted, at the same time as wondering what on earth I was doing! On the surface, it seems such an obvious statement. For me, though, it represented a realm of possibility that I found immensely scary. How do you react to it?
Do you think, ‘Oh fantastic!’ Or ‘Of course!’ Perhaps there’s something in between like, ‘Mmm – what exactly do I want anyway?’ Or maybe you already know. If you find you’re having difficulty with this statement like I did, then ask yourself the following:
If I could have whatever I wanted, what would it be?
And make a list. It may be a list of things, or of experiences, or a mixture. Take the time to acknowledge the feelings around each of the things on your list, or if you haven’t been able to make a list, then notice the feelings you have that are causing this.
When I first created my list, when I first dared to make this statement and attempt to provide an answer, the feelings that arose for me were so strong that I just had to back off a bit. That may happen, or a version of it, to you too. Simply notice what the feelings are and stay with them for now. Whatever you are feeling, it’s OK. In order to know where you’re going and what you want in life or in your business, you have to know where you are now, where you are starting from. This last sentence is so crucial I’ll repeat it: in order to know where you’re going and what you want in life or business, you have to know where you are now, where you are starting from. It’s not any different from any kind of travel – if you want to know how to get to San Diego, California, you need to know where you are starting from in the world.
This, however, is inner travel, and the landmarks around you are your thoughts and feelings. So let all those feelings in, whether they be excitement, fear, passion, happiness, pain or what. Notice if you’re censoring any thoughts. If so, are you willing to let yourself have those thoughts? When I first noticed this, it was around creating the house that I wanted. I really had to dare to allow myself to imagine exactly what I wanted, despite thoughts of “You’ll never find it in this town’, “That’s much too big for you”, “How can you justify that”.
Notice what your thoughts are and make a note of the thoughts that are getting in the way of your wants being manifest right now. These are the blockages to you getting what you want. So really observe yourself, and note them down.
Some years ago, I was in a money workshop, and dared to allow myself to think about the size of house I wanted. I drew a picture of a large house, many rooms, swimming pool, a Jaguar car, surrounded by lots of lovely countryside, plenty of land for the numerous horses I was going to have, etc etc. In front of the others, it felt very daring to admit I wanted what was for me, at that time, an ostentatious lifestyle. But it also felt very freeing to be able to admit it and have this desire witnessed by others.
It is only when you let yourself really imagine what you want that you can begin to attract it. For me, the funny thing was that when I really allowed this image in, I discovered that to have this particular scenario happen, I would need quite a large staff. That would bring considerable responsibility. I didn’t mind having staff in a business, but having them running my house did not feel so good, and consequently I chose to scale down what I wanted in my home life to something that didn’t require staff. For example, I really prefer swimming in the sea – so I moved my imaginings to another country and a house without a swimming pool, but next to a private beach!
So, if you can, write down what you want, knowing you can change and refine it. Whether you’ve managed this or not, what you’ll next need is tools to help you along on your journey. There’s a huge variety of different things out there, including RichThinking in all its various ways. Use as many techniques and other help that you can, and remember that enjoying the journey is nearly the whole point, because what do we do when we’ve got to where we want to be? We find another journey to have fun with!

I would say we already have got what we want…and we get it all the time. It’s just that we are not noticing the unconscious bits of us that are busy wanting stuff that conscious us hasn’t noticed. As the Captain of our ship and the Master of our Soul we think we are steering our life boat, but there can be all kinds of mutinies going on down below! Sometimes this works out for our best future — most likely you were not living in this large house because the sailors in your hold knew perfectly well that you didn’t really want all that staff! But perhaps you have got serious pirates on board who have decided that the direction the Captain has chosen doesn’t suit them…how do we find our Golden Fleece if our rowing team is not on message? Time to have a conversation!
Great analogy here, thanks Theolyn, and a very good point made too.
Good point Theolyn, and I love your analogy, thank you!
This is a great way to focus on what you want, but many people “settle” for a lot less than their TRUE desires as they have the “inner voices” telling them not to be greedy, they aren’t good enough, they dont’ deserve it, or anything along these lines. When these things come up they will sabotage your efforts and you will never reach your dreams.
Anyone knowing EFT will be able to “tap away” these thoughts and feelings in a matter of minutes and concentrate on exactly what they want from life. If you don’t know EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques), please go to google and look for “Free EFT Manual” and download it, learn it and do it. it’s easy!…
John.
Thanks John. I use EFT as one of my tools to help with negative thoughts and feelings and it is good one; great that you have reminded us.
Wonderful Jane! I love that you checked your first vision against your values, and discovered that what you thought you really wanted was not quite accurate — although mostly so. And I love that we share a very similar vision: home by the sea, private beach, horses and countryside. I’m partway there (4 blocks from the ocean) and working on my inner travels to map out the rest!
Carrie
Sounds good Carrie! Another thing I’ve discovered is that as I grow and change, what I want does too. So it pays to keep up tp date with yourself…
Thanks Jane. I needed to be reminded! And maybe we can talk ‘horses’ sometime when I’m back, I’d love to share with you my dream of setting up a horse sanctuary!
