Panic, papers, and your inner world

in Heart of RichThinking

A friend told me that the other day, they’d seen someone in the supermarket arrive at the checkout with a fully loaded trolley.

When it came to putting her newspaper on the moving belt, it was as if she’d seen the headlines for the first time. ‘PANIC!’ they screamed.

He watched as she look at this word, and then heard her say out loud ‘I don’t want to read about that!’ and promptly left the newspaper behind.

I liked this story because it showed me that someone, even when doing the often mindless job of supermarket shopping, was being aware of what they wanted to take in in their lives. And it led me to thinking of the effects of this financial upheaval that’s happening.

What I see are people

  • thinking more about what they want to spend their money on
  • wondering if they really want/need to fly off to a far-flung destination for their holiday
  • exploring buying recycled goods
  • making left-overs in the fridge into a nutritious meal
  • using their legs instead of their car for short journeys

Um — isn’t this a good thing? Seems to me it is, benefits the planet as well as individuals.

Frankly if the current situation leads to actions like the one above, then perhaps financial collapse and global warming are nature’s way of showing us where we’ve got our priorities wrong.

And giving us an opportunity to get our priorities back in order again.

I like that idea — it’s Rich Thinking for a start! It’s when we begin to put things in the wrong order in our lives that we go haywire inside. So for instance, if it seems like the end of the world if I don’t have the next car up in the range, or the designer label handbag, or the £250 night out, then maybe, maybe, it doesn’t really matter?

Maybe what matters is being able to have a car that goes, a bag that carries things effectively, a night in creating a meal with friends?

And if the thought of not having the first list is so horrifying, then just maybe we’re being guided towards an inner journey of exploration about why it’s such a horrifying thought.

So the question is — are the events in the financial world affecting you in a good way, or a bad way? By that I don’t mean whether you’ve lost money or not. I mean what’s going on inside your head — can you still think rich in the face of losing money, or lost money?

That’s the challenge!
