‘Jane!’ I heard my name being shouted from the end of the hallway, ‘you’ve been on that computer at least 3 hours without moving!’
‘OK, OK’ I replied, ‘I’ll be off in a minute’.
The truth is, I could easily have sat there another few hours probably, and then been amazed at the time when I eventually stopped.
This is Magnetic Bottom Syndrome, mentioned by me in an earlier newsletter, and originated by my American friend, Barbara, to describe her husband who’s bottom is even more magnetic than mine! It has the following symptoms:
- Fixed staring at a computer screen, whether laptop or main screen, it doesn’t matter
– Sore muscles upon arising from the chair
– Oblivious of time passing
And a further symptom, only experienced by some:
- Not noticing that you start doing one thing on the computer, only to be entranced into several other things, not to mention other interesting websites, and then you wonder why on earth you end up where you are when you stop
The thing about MBS is that it is normally detrimental to a happy family life, to a peaceful existence with one’s spouse, and to a healthy balance within the individual. So how do you stop being a sufferer?
Firstly, acknowledge that you are suffering
Secondly, determine that you want to stop suffering (even when it doesn’t feel like suffering to you, only to the rest of your family)
Thirdly, be willing to go through withdrawal symptoms when you first drag yourself away from the hot seat (such as having spare time and wondering what on earth to do with it)
Fourthly, take positive actions such as lovemaking, going for a walk, reading a book, taking a bath, cooking a meal, playing with the kids, having a phone conversation
And finally, choose to identify how you use your computer, and only use it for profitable, educational, leisure activities for SET periods of time.
Yes, this takes discipline, but it will be worth it! The prize is balance, a healthy body and mind, and (hopefully) more love in your life. At least, that’s what happened to me…
