What is Rich Thinking? Rich Thinking is a state of mind. It’s when your bank account is very low, but you still are grateful for what you do have, and find pleasure in your life anyway. It’s when you look into the eyes of a trusting child and give thanks they are in your life, even though half an hour before they were driving you round the bend. It’s when you’re walking through the woods and you notice the particular shape of the branches of a tree, and appreciate it’s beauty. And it’s when you let down your guard with your partner, trusting that in your vulnerability there is a strength that will bring you through difficult times.
Rich Thinking is actively choosing to see riches in every aspect of your life. While initially it might seem to be about the state of your finances, and it is about money as much as about any other aspect of your life, more broadly it’s about being willing to relate to the circumstances of your life in a rich way. For instance, in the last example above, you might not initially think of vulnerability and strength going together – if you’re being vulnerable, it doesn’t usually feel like your being very strong! But apply a rich thinking mindset and it can be. It can be because when sometimes when someone is vulnerable, they are are standing in the truth of their situation, and it is telling the truth about where you are that has both vulnerability and strength in it.
Rich Thinking is about recognizing that whether you appreciate something or not is completely dependent on your state of mind at the time. So if you’re out for a walk one day and you are in a good mood, everything you see seems attractive, welcoming; and even if you come across something irritating like litter having been left, you gladly pick it up, or don’t even notice it. Then the next day, you do the same walk, but in a different frame of mind, ie you’re in a bad mood. Now you don’t even notice the beauty that was so attractive the day before. The litter takes on much more importance, prompting you to make pronouncements about the state of society and how nobody cares these days. Clearly, one state of mind is much poorer to be in than another!
The great thing about being human is that we have choice. It may not feel like it all the time, but there is no-one else in your head except you, is there? Choosing new thoughts can change how we feel. It is entirely in our hands what we experience on that walk. It is entirely in our hands how we react to less money in our bank account than usual, or being made redundant, or any one of the thousand shocks that life may bring us.
This does not mean you have to feel good all the time, and if you’re not feeling good then blaming and criticizing yourself. This is poor thinking. What rich thinking means is letting yourself feel the full range of feelings; and being aware of them, including them. It means not wallowing in those feelings, but as soon as you see the possibility, actively taking charge of your thoughts and having the intention that, more often than not, to feel good and happy within yourself.
Here is one of the most powerful Rich Thoughts I know. Whenever you see that you are thinking Poor Thoughts, you have a choice. You can feel bad that you were “doing it again” or you can feel good that you noticed! Yes, in that very moment you can choose to feel bad or to feel good. Which do you prefer?
Rich Thinking means accepting who you are in any given moment, and knowing that you can choose to move forward positively from that place or not. And that is the essence of Rich Thinking – consciously choosing thoughts, more often than not, that make us feel good.
Are you a Rich Thinker or a Poor Thinker?
